As international students, are we important to our host country’s environment?

Yes!

The number of international students will climb to 8 million by the year of 2025. Apart from the large number, there are some other important relationships between international students and their host country.

The relationship can be shown on the host culture. International students represent a diversity in Australia influencing Australian culture by words and actions. Another reason why international students are important is the big contribution to Australia’s economy and ecosystem. The economic impact of international students is huge and includes tuition dollars, food and clothing, transportation and other living expenses.

Why we need to take the responsibility?

Protecting the environment also means protecting humanity. A great deal of pollution, especially ocean pollution, ends up affecting creatures that humans later consume, meaning that humans are ingesting toxins. The final reason to protect the environment is that humanity has a moral obligation to the world and its creatures.

Since we have taken part in the host community, we also need to take the responsibility to help the community to protect the environment.

3 positive ways to impact the environment:

Using water wisely

  • Take a shower every two days rather than one day. According to scientific research, people do not need to shower every day because it will also wash away your natural oil and good gems which protect your hair and body.
  • Form a habit of collecting re-used water and use it for toilets. Remember to collect the used water in disposable bottles instead of home used bowl or bottle.
  • If you use a dishwasher at home, avoid turning it on until it is full.

Carpooling

When using Uber or some other application to take a ride, try to avoid riding alone but choose to carpool.

Donating

  • Donating or voluntary work, e.g. Australian Conversation Foundation, Save The Children
  • Try to donate extra clothes or those that do not fit any more. There are some charities for you to try. Such as the salvos and Vinnies.
